New molecular confirmation tests detection Fusarium tomato and spinach seeds

Publicationdate: 1 mei 2024

From May 1, we can test the presence or absence of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici in seeds of tomato and Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. spinaciae in spinach seeds.

A morphological test at the level of Fusarium oxysporum has already been offered for both crops. By introducing a formae specialis (f.sp.) specific real-time PCR assay to the protocols, identification can be made more specifically, and the duration of the test will also be reduced.

The (real-time) PCR is a technique for rapid amplification of DNA

This is done with the help of pathogen-specific building blocks. The increase in DNA can be monitored digitally at any time. This makes it possible to faster and with more certainty confirm whether the seed samples actually contain the pathogen.

Fusarium oxysporum

F. oxysporum has more than hundred formae specials types, which cause different symptoms on different host plants. Each host plant has its own special formae or a select number of special formae that lead to pathogenicity responses.

The fungus penetrates the vascular tissue of the plant and affects the water supply. The leaves, deprived of water, show signs of wilting, chlorosis, yellowing and premature fall. Side shoots also show signs of wilting and large lesions may appear on the lower stems.

F. oxysporum is very abundant in all countries of the world, making it one of the most important plant pests.
