TRSV and ToRSV are transmitted by nematode Xiphinema americanum. Both the nematode and the viruses are on the European quarantine list. The nematode does not occur in Europe, but the viruses can travel with plant material and are still occasionally found.
TRSV and ToRSV have a wide host range, they have been found in vegetable crops, ornamental plants, and tree nursery crops. Partly due to the high risk of spreading, these viruses are identified as quarantine pathogens by countries such as Norway, China, Israel, Canada, Mexico and Moldova. Both viruses have also been classified as Regulated Non-Quarantine Pest (RNQP) by the EU.

The (real-time) PCR is a technique for rapid amplification of DNA. This is done with the help of pathogen-specific building blocks. The increase in DNA can be monitored digitally at any time. This makes it possible to faster and with more certainty confirm whether the seed samples actually contain the pathogen.
To support the sector, Naktuinbouw Testing & Analysis continues to develop new tests that can support diagnoses on plants and seeds with symptoms or just checking for and guaranteeing absence from certain plant pathogens.
