The awareness raising seminar of Plant Variety Protection (PVP) on August 22, 2024, in Metro Manila, Philippines was successful. This event represents a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and food security in the region, under the National Seed Technology Park (NSTP) Project, funded by the Dutch Enterprise Agency (RVO).

The seminar was organised through a collaboration led by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) of the Department of Agriculture - Philippines, with key support from Naktuinbouw and the Dutch government. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from the private seed sector, public and private breeding institutions, NGOs, farmers, and international experts.

Key Highlights:

  • Global Insights: UPOV Vice Secretary General, Yolanda Huerta, offered valuable perspectives on the UPOV 91 Act, emphasizing its role in driving agricultural innovation and providing farmers with access to a wider variety of high-quality seeds.
  • Vietnam’s Success Story: Dr. Nguyen Thanh Minh shared Vietnam's positive experience with UPOV membership, providing actionable insights for the Philippines.
  • Engaging Discussions: The seminar fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas and addressed various misconceptions related to UPOV and PVP. Contributions came from international experts such as Francine Sayoc, Marien Valstar, Yolanda Huerta, and Dr. Nguyen Thanh Minh, as well as national voices like Assistant Director of BPI Ruel Gesmundo and representatives from the farming community, with active participation from the audience.
  • Farmers’ Perspectives: Filipino farmers voiced a strong preference for improved seed varieties, highlighting the critical role of innovation in securing their livelihoods and the nation’s food security.

This seminar marks a crucial step in deepening the understanding of PVP in the Philippines, addressing both its potential benefits and the concerns it raises. We are eager to continue this conversation to foster innovation, support farmers, and contribute to sustainable agriculture.
