In the spotlights: Naktuinbouw and ISTA

Working according to internationally accepted laboratory methods

Seed analysis is traditionally an important activity in the world of seed breeding, seed production and trade. The importance of analysis and certification is continuing to increase in line with the growing globalisation of the seed trade. Certification gives authorities and buyers the assurance that a shipment of seed complies with certain, defined quality standards relating to for example, germination power, purity or the presence of weed seeds. The International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) plays a key role in this certification process. Naktuinbouw supports and promotes the importance of good seed analysis and certification for the seed sector.

Naktuinbouw Test Laboratory ISTA accredited

ISTA’s mission is to facilitate seed trading nationally and internationally. To achieve this, ISTA has produced internationally agreed rules for seed sampling and testing, accredited laboratories and provided international certificates for many years. In addition, ISTA disseminates knowledge in seed science and technology.

Inspectors take ISTA samples

Our inspectors regularly take official ISTA samples at vegetable seed companies. In 99% of the cases, these are for germination power and purity tests. For sampling purposes, it is important to have a uniform lot that meets the prescribed maximum sample size.

ISTA certificates are required to deliver seed lots to certain countries. Naktuinbouw's Test Laboratory is accredited by the ISTA. This implies that our laboratory works according to internationally accepted methods. We may issue an ISTA certificate with a sample if the tests have been performed in compliance with ISTA rules.

Digital ISTA certificates imminent

In 2022, ISTA worked on issuing digital ISTA certificates. In May, the rules that would permit this modification were approved. ISTA then trialled the system of e-certificates with a number of ISTA laboratories. The system will work via the ISTA website. From 2023 , the rules will be official and, like all accredited laboratories, we can issue ISTA e-certificates in addition to physical, paper certificates.

Participants get to know ISTA in the Seed Analysis training course

For many years Naktuinbouw has offered a basic Seed Analysis training course. This basic course for the entire seed sector deepens and widens knowledge. We are keen to share our expertise and experience with the sector. ISTA is a regular feature of this training: from explaining what the organisation represents and its importance, to implementing proven ISTA methods and pure seed rules. This teaches participants about the significance of seed analysis and certification.

In 2022, 19 participants followed the training.
